Engaging Voters
in the Decision They Face
Neighbors &
Friends,
Is it time to start insisting on
better representation in this government of
ours? Of course it is. It is always
that time. Before we can do that
effectively, though, we need to be able to define
for ourselves what 'Better Representation'
really is.
We can look at the moves our present
Representative has made on our behalf, but we
also have to look ahead and think about what the
next two years will require of Rhode Island and of
America. Then we should ask whether or not
anything in our current Rep's background would
lead us to believe he can make that
transition. If the answer to that question
is No, then you really should pay close attention
to these weekly newsletters from Me.
I'm your other option for the House of
Representatives in the upcoming
election. I've taken on this challenge
because I think I have a better vision of what
government should be than the incumbent does.
Also, I know I'd make a better natural
representative of the people of Warwick, or
Coventry, or Narragansett because I am more like
them. The range of life experiences we all
share gives me a much clearer perspective on how
government impacts my Friends & Neighbors,
because it hits me exactly the same way.
As you read on, I hope you will agree.

| Dan Yorke Talk's Strength
& Weakness
Last Thursday Mark returned to the Mic in Dan
Yorke's studio at WPRO radio to take on the
Talkmeister's toughest questions. The
exchange turned quickly to policy and Mark
emphasized his bias towards Smaller
Government both to Liberate the Economy and
to Empower the People.
Dan seemed to acknowledge his agreement but
honed in on two important matters to the campaign:
Defining its Opponent and Financing its
Message. As a long time talk show host Dan
Yorke is well known for the passion he brings to
the airways, especially when he feels the people
have somehow been wronged. He seemed to want
more indignation out of Mark and there may be a
kernel of truth to that position. For as
polite and congenial as their relationship has
always been before this Campaign, Zaccaria and his
opponent, James Langevin, have starkly contrasting
views of the role of the federal government and
Langevin's is wrong. Mark came away
realizing that point had to be made without any
ambiguity.
On the subject of campaign finances Yorke was
fierce. He peppered the candidate with money
questions and then goaded his audience to do their
part by helping out with a contribution. He
is not (presently) a financial supporter of the
MZD2 Campaign. He is passionate,
though, in his philosophical support for
opposing views being played out before the
people so they can decide, He sees
the possibility of a real contest for the hearts
and minds of 2nd District voters.
As usual, Mark left the studio grateful for
both the exposure and the
advice. |
Where's
Mark?
Mark attended a Meet the Candidates event in
West Warwick on Thursday. Judy Orson and the
West Warwick Republican Town Committee have
fielded a great local slate and Mark was
honored to be able to stand with them as they were
introduced. On Saturday Mark & Ruth
attended the Ocean State Policy Research
Institute's fundraiser. There they were able
to break out their shotguns and Think Skeet, in
the wilds of Exeter.
On Sunday Afternoon, August 24th, Mark will
attend the Coventry GOP's Fundraiser at Cafe
Romanzo, 495 Washington Street (Route 117),
in Coventry. The fun starts at 4:00pm.
Next week starts the Countdown to Labor Day
and the traditional beginning of the Lawn Sign
campaign. On Monday, the 25th, Wednesday,
the 27th, and Thursday, the 28th, Mark will host a
volunteer phone bank at RI GOP Headquarters, in
Warwick. Friends, Supporters, and College
Republicans will man the phones to call Registered
Republicans who live on busy streets from
Glocester to Westerly asking for permission to
plant a Lawn Sign over the long weekend. Do
you have a likely location? Save us a call
by E-Mailing the campaign with your name &
Address. Click Here It's an easy
and inexpensive way to make a big difference in
the Name Recognition Mark will need heading into
the final stretch. ...and Thank You!
On Tuesday, August 26th, Mark will attend the
regular meeting of the Warwick Republican City
Committee. Will he see you there?
In the weeks ahead the MZD2 Campaign will
make another stop in Warwick, on September 6th,
for a Fundraiser and Backyard Party at the home of
RIRA President Ray McKay.
On September 8th it's off to L'Attitude, in
Cranston, to help out Rob Paquin in his bid to win
the RI House Seat in District 19. Rob
is really making some noise in his race and you
can learn more, just Click
Here. You can also help out by joining
us from 5:00 - 7:00pm on the 8th. L'Attitude
is located at 2190 Broad Street, in
Cranston. Bring your checkbook and help
really put Rob in his place: The Rhode Island
House of Representatives!
Are you longing for a chance to meet Mark and
have a Sea Cruise, too? Then look ahead to
Sunday, September 14th, when the MZD2 Campaign
sails for Block Island to host a Meet & Greet
at the American Legion Hall, in New
Shoreham. Joining in will be Dave Coté, the
GOP Candidate for RI House District 36.
The Campaign calendar will continue to get
crowded. Keep up with it all in these
newsletters and on line at www.markz4ri.org
Thank
You.

What Game are You Playing
?

Last
Tuesday Mark met with James Langevin as the
Congressman moved about East Greenwich, making
appearances in the shops along Main Street and later at
the Town Hall. During the Q&A in the Town's
Council Chamber Mark asked his opponent for
clarification on his positions on both the Economy
and Energy.
Mr. Langevin's carefully worded answers indicated
that he was completely satisfied with the positions of
his House Leaders. In short, there would be no
additional US Oil Exploration on his watch and he agrees
with additional taxation on personal income as the best
means to pay for government programs he says are made
necessary by tough economic times.
After the formal portion of the town hall meeting
Mark chatted with Mr. Langevin and tried to explain that
those positions would prolong the current economic
difficulties and worsen our pain at the pump.
Zaccaria insisted that it is just these sorts of
differences that the candidates should debate before as
many voters as they can. The objective is to
inform the electorate so they can make the best decision
on Election Day.
The Congressman offered tepid affirmation that
there would be some sort of debates later on in the
campaign. Translation: James Langevin has no
intention of appearing publicly with his opponent in
this race.
He is playing a game of Political Chess. He
is not trying to assist the voters by detailing or
clarifying his positions on the issues.
Mark won't let him get away with that Cruise
Control approach to the fall campaign. Don't you
do it either. Call your Representative's Office
and let him know you want to watch at least one of the
Twenty Debates!
